Sickness on holiday
Over the last few years, record numbers of British tourists have suffered sickness on holiday as a result of inadequate hygiene. The typical symptoms are diarrhoea, vomiting and stomach cramps. Illnesses reported include salmonella, norovirus and E.colli. Hotels in the Dominican Republic, Morocco. Tunisia and Southern Spain have come in for particular criticisms. In 2007 dozens of holiday makers fell ill in the Dominican Republic in a high profile claim and there have been a number of outbreaks of serious illness, including Legionnaires disease, on some cruises. Even local British holiday centres have not escaped; in the summer of 2007 75 people at a Butlins Holiday Camp in Bognor Regis were taken ill with gastric illness from norovirus.
It is important to be vigilant about hotel hygiene. Do not hesitate to seek medical assistance if you fall ill on holiday. Suffering in silence only to raise the issue when you have returned home will make it very difficult to prove the link between your illness and the hotel/resort in question. If hotel hygiene is poor and you are suffering sickness as a result, your fellow holidaymakers should also be affected. It is important to obtain and keep safely the contact details of fellow tourists similarly affected.
Quite often when they return home people will correspond with the tour operator and may well be offered a small sum of money or a small reduction off their next holiday by way of compensation. It is best to seek legal advice before accepting this as you may be letting the tour operator off too lightly and grossly under settling a good claim.
