Defending Reputations
RJW has an experienced and highly regarded team specialising in protecting the reputations of trade unions and their members. We can assist in the following areas:
Defamation
Reputations can be destroyed by untrue allegations. You are defamed when there has been publication to others of words or other material which lowers you in the estimation of right thinking members of society. The publication may be in writing (libel) or spoken (slander). Russell JonesĀ & Walker can assist when a member or official considers they have been defamed, for example in the media or in the workplace. The law of defamation is constantly evolving, in particular with regard to the media's right to freedom of expression. We can provide guidance on the most up to date legal position and what action might be taken.
In addition, we can advise officials on press releases or on items for publication in union magazines if there is material contained within them which could give rise to a claim for defamation.
Prospect can refer cases for members to get expert advice on defamation from RJW. This is limited to initial letters of advice though and Prospect does not provide funding for further stages in a defamation cases.
