Expertise
Tim Coolican is a partner in the Business and Regulatory Investigations and the Crime and Misconduct groups He works in Russell Jones & Walker’s Birmingham office.
Tim is regularly instructed in a wide range of cases. His work includes investigations and prosecutions conducted by the CPS, Revenue and Customs, the Health and Safety Executive and the Environment Agency.
He has substantial experience of representing police officers facing criminal and disciplinary proceedings.
Tim frequently represents clients appearing at Coroner’s Inquests.
He has acted in applications for Judicial Review relating to: Criminal Procedure, Disciplinary Proceedings, Inquests and Extradition.
Experience
Significant cases include:
The defence of an accountant prosecuted for conspiracy to steal and perverting the course of justice. Following a three month trial Tim’s client was acquitted of all charges.
The defence of a £12.7m money laundering prosecution, arising from operation Devout.
The representation of a suspect in the City of London Police investigation into Michael Brown, a donor to the Liberal Democrats, accused of a £45m fraud.
The Police/HSE investigation and subsequent Inquest into the Fatal blast at the Corus Plant in Port Talbot.
The defence of 9 police officers charged with offences of misconduct in public office, assault and dangerous driving relating to the death in police custody of Michael Powell. All of his clients were acquitted following a three month trial.
The representation of a police officer during the first ever Police Misconduct Hearing held in public.
Career
Tim joined Russell Jones & Walker on qualification in 1998. He was made a Partner 2003.
Education
Studied History and Law at the University of Kent.
Publications
Tim has written a number of articles on a variety of subjects including fraud, money laundering and corporate killing.
