Jacqueline Young, Solicitor

Jacqueline advises a wide range of clients (both Claimant and Defendant) in respect of Libel (including internet libel), Slander, Breach of Confidence/Privacy, Data Protection and issues of Reputation Management.

Claimant Libel
Jacqueline has recently settled claims against The Sun, The Daily Mail, The Daily Telegraph, Harper Collins and the BBC obtaining damages, costs and an apology for clients in each case. The claims encompassed disputes arising over the publication of defamatory allegations, the publication of misleading and sensitive information and the misuse of photographs.

Defendant Libel
Jacqueline acted for a large national charity who were sued in libel by former employees achieving a successful negotiated settlement before trial. Jacqueline is currently defending a national gentleman's club which has been sued in libel by a former employee.

Internet Libel
Jacqueline is regularly instructed to approach Internet Service Providers with the aim of removing defamatory postings on web sites which they host.

Reputation Management
Jacqueline advised the police officers who investigated the Royal Butlers on the intensive media coverage which followed the collapse of their criminal trials. Jacqueline also advised the Police Federation in relation to BBC1's broadcast of "The Secret Policeman" the high profile programme examining attitudes to race in a police training school following a journalists infiltration of Greater Manchester Police. Jacqueline also advised a union in relation to media coverage arising out of police investigations.
 
Confidence/Privacy
Jacqueline has developed a practice specialism in the law of confidence and privacy. She has successfully settled numerous disputes arising from disclosures made in the workplace. She has also settled a claim against the BBC arising out of a "fly on the wall" documentary and a claim against Aer Lingus in relation to an advertising campaign.  This has led to media recognition as an expert commentator, and she has appeared on Sky News BBC 1, BBC2, BBC News 24, Radio 5 Live and Einstein TV in relation to the cases involving Naomi Campbell, Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas, David Beckham and Maxine Carr.

Jacqueline assisted Jeremy Clarke-Williams with his Defamation practitioners text book " A Practitioners Guide to Libel and Slander", published by Butterworths contributing chapters on Breach of Confidence, Privacy, and Industry Regulation.

Jacqueline joined Russell Jones & Walker in 1996 as a Trainee Solicitor. She joined the Defamation Unit upon qualification in 1998. Jacqueline is a member of the London Solicitors Litigation Association.
