Paternity

The arrival of a new baby is a time of change for the whole family.  All family members need and appreciate time to get to know the new baby, and it is a time when everyone, especially the mother, needs extra support and care.  New fathers (natural and adoptive) or the mother's partner (male or female) have a legal entitlement to two weeks paternity leave paid at the statutory rate (currently £112.75 per week).  Fathers also have a right to a longer period of unpaid parental leave.  There may be other work issues for fathers and partners at this demanding time, such as a wish to work more flexibly.

Your right to paternity leave

Our experience is that unfortunately many employers are simply not aware of the rights to paternity or maternity support leave or may be less accepting of requests for leave or flexible working from fathers than from mothers.  The perception that fathers do not need to be as involved as mothers lingers, and many of those who experience problems are concerned about the effect this may have on their careers.

We can help you deal with paternity issues

Our team has assisted many new fathers and partners to deal with these sorts of issues at work, and many can be resolved informally, without the need for litigation.

Our factsheets provide useful advice for any family wanting to know about maternity and paternity entitlements, as well as advice on requests for flexible working.
