We have acted in many cases where people have fallen ill by unknowingly drinking contaminated water. One of the common gastrointestinal illnesses that can arise due to drinking contaminated water is Cryptosporidiosis. The Cryptosporidium parasite has an incubation period of 2-5 days and can cause diarrhoea, stomach pain, dehydration and fever.
Contaminated water causes cryptosporidiosis outbreak.
Residents in Tywyn, Aberdyfi, Bryncrug, Rhyd yr Onen and Brynglas have been urged to watch out for the potential symptoms of Cryptosporidiosis following the contamination of local water supplies.
Heavy rainfall on and before August 11th caused the region’s water treatment process to fail and supplies were contaminated with the Cryptosporidium parasite. This mirrors a similar incident in the North Wales area in 2005, which saw more than 1000 people struck down with the illness, after the water supply to 70,000 people was found to contain the same contaminant.

Spread and symptoms of cryptosporidium
Cryptosporidium is usually spread through consumption of contaminated water or food, or contact with infected faeces. The parasite has an incubation period of two to five days and symptoms to look out for include watery diarrhoea, stomach pain, dehydration and fever and while they usually last several days, they can continue for weeks. Elderly people and young children are at particular risk of illness, and those with immune problems may also have a more prolonged recovery time.
