Pressure sores
The clinical negligence team at Russell Jones & Walker Solicitors can advise you on claiming compensation for pressure sores which have occurred in hospitals or care homes.
Pressure sores are preventable and their presence is often an indication of poor care. Up to 10 percent of hospital patients can suffer with some degree of pressure sores. The majority of cases involve patients over 70 years old. The remainder of cases are generally individuals with spinal injuries. Poor nutrition is often a major cause of pressure sores.
We recognise the severity of problems that can follow from failure to follow simple protocols.
Pressure sores are prevented by undertaking risk assessments, turning the patient, changing bedding to keep it dry and by the use of special mattresses.
If an area of skin becomes red and sore then this indicates that the skin is breaking down. This can lead to a pressure sore which can then become infected. If left untreated it can lead to severe mobility problems and the need for special mobility aids. The patient may also require skin grafts to repair the damage. Likely areas for pressure sores are the heels, ankles, back and buttocks.
