Drug or medication errors

Legal claims for compensation following a drug error are extremely common. More than 40,000 medication errors are made in the NHS each year. Half of these errors will cause moderate to severe harm to patients. A momentary lack of attention by a health professional can mean that a patient receives the wrong type or wrong strength medication, sometimes with devastating results.

Mostly these errors are picked up by the patient or their carer but often patients will not question why their medication has changed despite recognising a difference in their prescription.

Individual errors occur in GP practices, high street pharmacies, care homes and at hospital. Incorrect medication can lead to the patient’s underlying condition getting much worse and/or the creation of a new illness. In extreme cases the patient is given a repeat prescription for the wrong medication and the situation can persist for weeks or even months.

Our lawyers have experience of legal claims following:

  • Warfarin/heparin dose errors leading to pulmonary embolism / death
  • Incorrect strength/doses of medicine
