Why can I claim for Asbestos poisoning?

Although asbestos is no longer used in buildings, its use was wide-spread in the 1930s and 40s. Millions of people have been exposed to asbestos at work. Not all will develop a disease as a result of their exposure but those that do are entitled to make a claim for compensation. This is because many companies knew about the dangers of exposure to asbestos but did not adequately warn or protect their employees.

It is also possible if you were exposed to asbestos in circumstances other than work. For example if a family member was exposed to the fibres and transferred them to you or if you lived near a factory were asbestos use was commonplace.

What illnesses are caused by asbestos exposure?

There are a number of different illnesses which are, or may be, caused by asbestos exposure, although you cannot claim compensation for them all: pleural plaques, pleural thickening, asbestosis, mesothelioma, lung cancer.
