Teenage accident victim in battle for compensation
20 November 2007
The Birmingham High Court today (19th November 2007) will hear the compensation claim of Nikki Buckley age 22 from Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands. She suffered severe spinal injuries on 14th April 2002 when aged 17. A car driven by Stewart McCollam in Rectory Road Sutton Coldfield mounted the pavement and collided with her causing fractures to her spine which left her paralysed (tetraplegic) with minimal use of her arms. McCollam was convicted at the Birmingham Crown Court in July 2002 of dangerous driving, driving under the influence of alcohol, and failing to stop at the scene of an accident. He was imprisoned for two years and banned from driving for 4 years.
As a result of her injuries Nikki requires 24 hour care, specially adapted accommodation, and aids and equipment.
She said:
“The actions of this driver have devastated my life. I am lucky to have a supportive and loving family and many friends who have helped me try to live as normal a life as possible. They have been brilliant.
I hope that if people see what has happened to me because of the actions of this man they will think twice before having a drink and getting behind the wheel of a car.”
Her solicitor Richard Langton said;
“It is disappointing that McCollam’s insurers have made Nikki fight the case to trial without settling it beforehand. This has added to her worry. However she has fought adversity with tremendous spirit and it is a testament to her courage that she is at court to obtain a proper award. Full financial compensation will allow Nikki independence and whilst she can’t do many things we all take for granted, she amazes everyone who meets her with her positive approach to life.”
