Victory For Prison Service Whistleblower Hits The Headlines

Former Senior Prison Officer Carol Lingard, received an apology from the Director General of HM Prison Service following the success of her claim for unfair dismissal due to whistleblowing.
Mrs Lingard reported claims of prisoners being bullied and intimidated at Wakefield prison, in West Yorkshire, but the Service failed to deal properly with her investigations. Instead of investigating her claims seriously, word spread that Mrs Lingard was "a grass". Mrs Lingard, 32 weeks pregnant at the time, became the victim of intimidation and discrimination. Her health suffered, and despite an exemplary professional record of 15 years service, she eventually lost her job as a result.
In a damning judgment, the employment tribunal condemned senior management of the prison service for their "collective failures" and "seriously flawed judgement".
