Metropolitan Police Sergeant Claim in Employment Tribunal Tomorrow (Tues 25 April)

24 April 2006

  • Virdi v. Metropolitan Police Service/Centrex  at Employment Tribunals, Victory House, 30-34 Kingsway, London WC2B 6EX.

Gurpal Virdi, a Sergeant in the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS), will attend a 2 day pre-hearing review tomorrow (Tuesday 25 April) concerning his Employment Tribunal proceedings of race discrimination, victimisation and disability discrimination against the Metropolitan Police Service and Central Police Training and Development Authority (Centrex).

Speaking on his behalf, Mr Virdi’s lawyer, Arpita Dutt, employment partner at national law firm Russell Jones & Walker, says:

”Mr Virdi claims that the MPS and Centrex failed to make reasonable adjustments to the arrangement to accommodate him within the Police promotion examinations for promotion to Detective Inspector, which he sat whilst disadvantaged by the effect of a cyst in his eye.

“Specifically, he was not allowed a further 15-20 minutes to sit an examination nor to have a five minute break after each hour of the exam, which he says he required on account of his visual impairment.

“He also claims the Force failed to progress his grievance thereafter.

”Mr Virdi also claims that the MPS discriminated against him on grounds of race and victimised him in respect of not recommending his application under the TOWBAR (Trial of Workplace Based Assessment) scheme to enable him to be assessed against competencies for promotion.

”The purpose of the pre-hearing review is to determine whether Mr Virdi's claims can proceed against both parties. The claim is being vigorously defended by both the MPS and Centrex.”

Mr Virdi is also represented by Mohinderpal Sethi of Devereux Chambers and his claim is supported by the Police Federation of England and Wales.
