Over 100 London Salmonella victims may seek compensation

25 February 2005

Following what may be London's largest salmonella outbreak for some years a group of people who contracted the illness from an East London kebab shop are to sue the owners for compensation. They suffered severe diarrhoea and vomiting after eating food from the A1 Kababish outlet in Romford Road, Manor Park, East London and it is suspected that over 100 people could claim compensation because they have been infected with food from the restaurant.

The outlet has since been closed by Newham Council in conjunction with the North East London Health Protection Unit, using their powers under the Food Safety Act 1990.

Ian Walker, partner at Russell Jones & Walker, says: "Food health experts are trying to identify the source of the problem. Meanwhile, it seems that over 100 people are currently severely ill, having eaten at this outlet.

"We have been instructed by the first two of a large group of people to launch a claim for compensation from the outlet's owners and we now await the report from the food health unit.

"This is a very widespread outbreak with serious medical and legal consequences. I would be grateful if any witnesses would call me on 0207 837 2808 to help those suffering.

"I understand that people were treated at the Newham General and King George's hospitals.

"Meanwhile, if people in that area find themselves suffering diarrhoea and vomiting, they should seek medical and legal advice as soon as possible."

Mr Nitin Majevadia, a 33 year old IT manager at an investment bank, who lives on Romford Road, E7, is one of those who have launched a legal claim.

He says: "I ate chicken, chick peas, potatoes and salad with chilli sauce and was so ill I have had to visit hospital three times. My friend, who ate with me, had to be resuscitated in hospital.

"Even now, over two weeks later, I am in pain and can't keep food in at all. I have lost over a stone in weight and have had to have two weeks off work.  I'm still not sure when I'll be well enough to return to work."

Anyone who is suffering after eating at the A1 Kebabish on Romford Road should call Ian Walker on 0207 837 2808.
