A company has been prosecuted following an incident in which one of its workers died.
During a recent hearing at Goole magistrates' court, Transatlantic UK - a firm which provides air freight, sea freight and road freight services - was dealt a fine of £10,000 and was also ordered to pay costs of £7,442.
The accident occurred in October 2006 at the Aldam Terminal on Goole Docks.
A Russian seaman was overseeing the loading of a vessel when he was struck and fatally injured by a reach stacker vehicle, which was being used to lift containers on to the ship.
"This tragic incident could have been avoided had the company shown forethought and applied some basic planning to their dockside operations," stated Health and Safety Executive inspector Kirsty Welsh.
She went on to say that employers must carefully examine the potential hazards of the workplace and take steps to mitigate their risk.
