A firm has been issued a fine of £50,000 following an incident in which one of its staff members suffered serious burns.
In August 2004, agency worker Ryan White was engaged in the process of destroying pyrotechnic composition when it ignited.
As a result, the 21-year-old sustained burns to his face, neck and arms.
During a recent hearing at Cardiff crown court, military vehicle and weapons designer and manufacturer BAE Systems Land Systems was found guilty of health and safety breaches.
According to the findings of a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation, the disposal procedures being used at the time of the incident did not comply with BAE's own approved control specification.
In addition to its fine, the company was ordered to pay costs of £15,000 and compensation to Mr White of £5,000.
Commenting on the case, HSE investigating inspector David Norman said: "Overall, the preventive measures taken by the company to ensure the safe disposal of pyrotechnic composition were ineffective."
