A serious back injury sustained by a care assistant has resulted in her receiving a payout in an out of court settlement, the Ipswich Evening Star reports.
The woman, who cannot be named, was lifting a patient along with the help of a fellow worker when the accident occurred.
While hoisting the patient with the use of a handling belt, the carers attempted to adjust the person's clothes. At this point, the patient fell on to the carer.
Commenting on the incident, the care assistant said: "My injury could easily have been avoided if I'd had proper training.
"Looking back, we shouldn't have attempted the task without a third person present to adjust the patient's clothing."
Figures produced by the Health and Safety Executive suggest that injuries that arise as a result of handling, lifting and carrying were the second most common to afflict workers in the UK during 2006-07.
