Patient injury results in fine for NHS trust

Published 22/07/2008

An injury sustained by a patient has resulted in a fine for the NHS trust involved.

In October last year, an elderly woman was scolded while taking a bath in the John Radcliffe Hospital.

She suffered burns to her body and, despite having been due to leave the hospital that day, she had to remain there for an extra six weeks in order to recover from her injuries.

The bath she used had not been fitted with a thermostatic mixing valve prior to the incident.

During a recent hearing, the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust - which also runs the Churchill Hospital, Radcliffe Infirmary and Horton General Hospital - was issued a fine of £8,000, as well as being ordered to pay costs of £2,286.

It had pleaded guilty to charges under Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

"I would advise those who care for vulnerable people to ensure they have adequate controls in place to prevent a similar accident occurring," stated Health and Safety Executive inspector Matthew Lee.
