MPs harangue Lords' pleural plaques ruling
Published 02/11/2007
MPs have continued their opposition to the House of Lords’ judgement on pleural plaques, calling for the decision to be overturned.
A group of 13 MPs published an Early Day Motion in the Commons, expressing their disappointment and claiming to believe pleural plaques caused by asbestos “result in physiological damage that constitutes a loss of faculty, which has an effect on the individual’s wellbeing and may cause anxiety about further complications.”
The group called on the Secretary of State for Justice, Jack Straw, to Introduce legislation to overturn the Lords’ judgement “because it is now clear that workers suffering the condition will not get justice in the courts.”
The EDM was followed by a question to the minister from Labour MP Jim Sheridan, who asked, ” Will he bring forward legislative proposals to provide compensation to people who have experienced asbestos-related diseases such as pleural plaque, and their families?”
