Max Mosley to sue over alleged libel

Published 28/07/2008

Following his recent court win against the News of the World over claims of invasion of privacy, Max Mosley is set to begin a libel case against the publication.

The 68-year-old president of non-profit organisation the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile won £60,000 after it was ruled that the newspaper's story, which suggested he had engaged in a sexual encounter with five dominatrixes that had "Nazi connotations", was unlawful.

He has now issued a writ for defamation against the News of the World.

Speaking to the Sunday Telegraph he said: "I am the victim of an unlawful act by someone else in the same way as I would be if I was mugged. The [News of the World] stole my image and my dignity."

According to a report in the Financial Times, a successful libel action could result in a payout significantly higher than the amount he received after it was ruled the publication had invaded his privacy.
