Literary agent files defamation case against Wikipedia
Published 09/05/2008
A literary agent has filed a defamation case against online information resource Wikipedia as a result of an entry made concerning her, VNUNet.com reports.
Barbera Bauer alleges that the website and its users defamed her when they posted comments that she was the "dumbest of the twenty worst" literary agents, adding that she had "no documented sales at all".
In response to the entries, Ms Bauer has filed legal cases against the users who posted the comments, as well as Wikipedia itself.
Wikipedia, however, argues that it is protected from such legal action.
"We provide a platform through Wikipedia for smart citizens to give their knowledge back to a larger culture," stated Wikimedia general counsel Mike Godwin.
He added: "Our ability to offer citizens that platform is at stake in this case."
Founded by Larry Sanger and Jimmy Wales, Wikipedia is an open content encyclopaedia.
