Insurers agree to compensation settlement with injured pensioner

The insurance firm responsible for a motorist who ran into a pensioner has agreed to a compensation settlement.

During a recent high court hearing in London, the firm consented to the deal, which will see the elderly victim receive a lump sum of £100,000 a year, plus annual payments of £25,000 to cover the costs of her care, the Hertfordshire Mercury reports.

Irene Davis was hit by the car in the town of Cheshunt, which is situated in the Hertfordshire borough of Broxbourne, in November 2005.

As a result of the impact, she sustained hip fractures and head injuries which caused brain damage.

She was forced to give up her independence and move into a nursing home.

During the hearing, Mr Justice Sweeney praised Ms Davis' family for the care they have provided, stating that such efforts "can never be underestimated".

He added: "You should be commended for the way you have cared for [her]."
