Former stockbroker wins compensation for false paternity claim

A former stockbroker who sued his girlfriend after she dishonestly made him believe he had fathered a son with her has been awarded £22,000 in compensation.

Sir John Blofeld made the award after deciding that the 46-year-old woman had acted dishonestly in order to convince the man that her child was his.

The man did not find out that he was not the boy's father until the child was five years old, and was suing for the distress that this caused him.

However, the man was not compensated for money he had spent on expenses such as nursery fees, which came to £37,000.

The woman had claimed that she had no reason to believe that the man was not the boy's father.

Mr Blofeld said: "Having accepted A's (the man's) evidence and rejected B's (the woman's) I have no difficulty in finding that representations were made on a large number of occasions and were untrue and when they were made they were fraudulent."
