Food company made to pay out

A Southall food storage company has been fined following an incident in which one of its employees was injured.

In February 2006, Thomas Lewis ran to avoid a pallet falling off racking and on to him and slipped. He was subsequently taken to Ealing hospital with a dislocated hip.

Noon Products, a chilled and frozen food manufacturer, was fined £13,000 and ordered to pay £2,561 in costs by a judge at the City of London Magistrates Court after admitting to breaching health and safety laws.

Health and Safety inspector Nicola Maisuria stated: "Mr Lewis' accident was entirely preventable and simple measures could have been taken to avoid it as the employer was aware of the risk of injury."

Accidents involving employees slipping or tripping are sometimes seen as trivial and the source of jokes, but they can have serious consequences, as this case demonstrates, she added.
