Firm and employee fined following workplace accident

A firm and one of its workers have been issued fines as a result of a workplace accident.

In March last year, a member of staff at Ammeraal Beltech - a global process and conveyor belting provider - lost his hand in an unguarded machine.

Before the incident occurred, his colleague, production operative Graham Parker, had been asked to fix the guard and had failed to do so.

During a recent hearing at Bradford magistrates' court, Mr Parker was ordered to pay £500 after pleading guilty to health and safety breaches.

The company, meanwhile, was fined £20,000 plus costs of £1,143.

"Mr Parker had been made aware, before the incident, of the absence of a guard on the mixer. He was asked to ensure that this absence was rectified, but he failed in his duty, resulting in an horrific injury to one of the staff," stated Health and Safety Executive inspector Paul Yeadon.
