Family of teen cancer sufferer launch clinical negligence claim

Published 19/06/2008

The family of a teenager whose cancerous tumour went undiagnosed for two years launched a battle for compensation earlier this year, the Hull Daily Mail reports.

Hayley Duplock, who is now 16 years old, began complaining about weight gain and sickness after eating, as well as pain in her abdominal area, in 2005 and was sent to doctors.

However, medics and dieticians failed to detect the tumour and thought she may have been suffering from irritable bowel syndrome - a condition of the gut that predominantly affects women.

Only after her father expressed concern was Hayley referred to a hospital for a scan, which revealed a tumour on her right ovary the size of a football.

Her legal team claim that the tumour ruptured prior to surgery, allowing cancerous cells to escape.

Now, after an operation and chemotherapy, the teenager has been told there are no signs of cancer left in her body.
