Elton John launches libel case against newspaper

Pop legend Elton John is taking legal action over an article published in the Guardian, according to reports in the Press Gazette.

The singer is said to be accusing the publication of libel in relation to an article written by columnist Marina Hyde.

Elton is suing the Guardian News and Media, which publishes papers including the Guardian, the Observer and the Manchester Evening News, for allegedly implying he has racist and uncaring attitudes.

The entertainer is seeking damages of £150,000.

According to a high court writ, Ms Hyde's story suggested that he uses the annual White Tie and Tiara Ball for the Elton John Aids Foundation for purposes of self-promotion and to meet celebrities, rather than to raise money for his charity.

Although the Guardian took down the article temporarily, it was reinstated on July 15th on the website.

Meanwhile, the newspaper declined to comment on the case for legal reasons.
