Dockyard and MoD made to pay £12k following accident

Devonport Royal Dockyard and the Ministry of Defence (MoD) have been made to pay £12,000 in damages after an incident in which a ship's rigger was injured, Workplace Law Network reports.

Kevin Reynard, who is based in Devonport, was standing on the stern of 13-year-old vessel HMS Somerset to assist in the ship being turned around.

The 44-year-old was providing instructions via a radio to sailors on board the boat in an attempt to prevent it from straying too close to the dockside wall.

However, as a result of a movement by HMS Somerset, a rope fused and melted, subsequently passing through the hands of the sailors holding on to it.

It went on to hit Mr Reynard on his right wrist and, as a result of his injuries, he had to have a steel plate and six screws inserted into the affected area.
