Divorces 'boom' in Southport

Published 14/01/2008

Law firms in the Merseyside town of Southport are experiencing a flood of divorce requests, the Southport Visiter reports.

According to the North West Legal Services Commission, a body responsible for administering legal aid, the strain of the festive season was responsible for pushing a fifth of couples to breaking point.

Pressures associated with the time of year, such as financial problems, arguments among relatives and estranged parents being separated from their children, were all identified as having a part in the rise in divorce proceedings.

Commenting on the issue, reverend Rod Garner of the Holy Trinity Church, stated: "The increase in divorce rates after Christmas does not surprise me. The festive period is a stressful time which brings many problems, including money worries.

"Many people live on plastic during the lead up to Christmas and the excessive spending catches up with them in the new year."
