Disabled cyclist secures compensation following road accident

A disabled cyclist has been awarded a payout of £2,500 after he was injured in a road accident.

Wheelchair user Andy Ebben, who comes from the small north Shropshire market town of Market Drayton, was cycling between Cheswardine and Adbaston when both tyres of his recumbent bike were punctured by blackthorn and hawthorn debris.

The 55-year-old was thrown to the ground and suffered severe cuts and bruises.

In addition, he was unable to get up due to his spinal problems and was therefore forced to call for assistance from the roadside.

Following the incident, Mr Ebben took legal action against the landowner responsible for the road on which the debris lay.

He said: "I accept the occasional puncture is inevitable and I do face the risk of coming off the bike. However, there is a clear responsibility to warn road users of potential hazards and to clear the road as soon as possible."
