Cristiano Ronaldo wins libel damages

Footballer Cristiano Ronaldo has secured libel damages from a UK newspaper.

The Manchester United player and Portuguese international sued the News Group Newspapers over a story which was published in February.

In the article, it was alleged that the 23-year-old had been fined £8,000 by manager Alex Fergusson for using a mobile phone on the pitch during a training session.

During a recent hearing at London's high court, Ronaldo accepted a public apology and an undisclosed sum.

Commenting on his legal case, he said: "I felt it necessary to bring this action in order to protect my reputation as a professional footballer.

"Contrary to the impression the article gave, I take training very seriously and do not want people to think I do not try my best in training."

Ronaldo added that he is pleased he has been successful and he will donate the damages he receives to a charity.
