Compensation award for ex-machine driver with dermatitis

A former-machine driver has won his fight for compensation after he contracted dermatitis through his exposure to fluids at work.

James Quinn was employed with Mone Brothers Civil Engineering from 1985 to 2004, during which time his work necessitated his coming into contact with grease lubricant as well as hydraulic, diesel and engine oils.

It was alleged by Mr Quinn that his former employers had acted negligently in failing to provide the required protective garments or sufficent washing facilities.

The case was settled when the two parties reached an out of court settlement.

News of the case follows findings from the Health & Safety Executive showing that between 2003 and 2005, some 3,200 new cases of work-related skin disease were diagnosed by specialist physicians.

Meanwhile, around three-quarters of these were found to be contact dermatitis.
