Accident at work results in prosecution for printing firm

Published 03/07/2008

A worker fall has led to a printing company being prosecuted for health and safety breaches, it has been revealed.

In July 2005, an employee of Clays - a European print group which was established over 200 years ago - was conducting maintenance work on the roof of a building.

After losing his footing, the staff member fell seven metres through a skylight on to a metal cage.

The injuries he sustained caused him to be off work for a number of months.

As a result of the incident, Clays was recently issued a fine of £32,000 and was ordered to pay £12,000 in costs during a hearing at Lowestoft magistrates' court.

Commenting on the case, Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspector Jon Elven said: "[Clays] exposed both employees and sub contractors to potentially dangerous situations and HSE will not hesitate to take action against those who fall short of the law in such a serious way."
