The death of a young apprentice has resulted in a fine for a coachbuilding company, it has been revealed.
S Cartwright & Sons - a family-run company based in Altrincham - was ordered to pay £7,000 and £17,376 in costs during a recent hearing at Manchester crown court as a result of the incident.
It pleaded guilty to a charge under Regulation 8 (1) (c) of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.
The accident occurred in February 2006 when 16-year-old Ashley Saunders was playing football in the company's yard with some colleagues.
After following the ball on to the factory roof where it had been kicked, the apprentice fell 5.3 metres through a skylight to the floor below.
He died as a result of his injuries.
Commenting on the case, Health and Safety Executive principal inspector Vincent Joyce said: "Access to the roof should be restricted to employees and contractors with adequate knowledge and training in working at height."
