Nick Holroyd is a Senior Principal Lawyer within our Criminal & Misconduct department in Manchester with 25 years experience in complex criminal defence, particularly high profile fraud and regulatory cases.
Nick and the team are classified as a first tier firm in the Legal 500 2011 Directory. The Legal 500 Directory 2010 states that 'Russell Jones & Walker has a strong fraud and regulatory presence in the form of Nick Holroyd'. As a part of the top tier white collar crime team, Nick ‘always makes himself available and takes the time to discuss matters thoroughly’ with clients. In Chambers & Partners 2011, "Interviewees praise his client service skills". They remark that "He makes himself available and takes the time to discuss matters thoroughly".
Nick has been acting in several HMRC prosecutions including a £60 million VAT fraud and is currently advising individuals in an ongoing complex mobile phone carousel and MTIC fraud prosecutions. Other experience includes defending individuals facing large-scale investigations into tobacco importation and tax repayment fraud.
In 2008 Nick successfully defended a Yorkshire business man charged with conspiracy to defraud the Betfair internet betting exchange. The case attracted considerable publicity given that Rodgers was charged together with a number of jockeys including champion jockey Kieran Fallon. All the defendants were acquitted.
He also led the Manchester team in defending a businessman accused of a multi million pound bank factoring fraud and is currently advising in connection with a number of so called ‘boiler room’ frauds involving substantial sums of money being investigated by the police and the SFO.
Nick has considerable practical experience in both prosecution and defence of health and safety at work investigations. In particular, he has successfully represented a number of individuals prosecuted by the CPS and the Health and Safety Executive arising from fatal industrial accidents and has substantial experience in representing companies in connection with road transport prosecutions and inquiries.
Also highly regarded for professional discipline work Nick has represented parties in high profile inquests and public inquiries including the Hillsborough Inquests arising from the football disaster in 1989, The Ashworth Hospital Inquiry, North Wales Child Abuse Inquiry and the Shipman Inquiry.
He is currently advising in connection with the ongoing Redfern Inquiry in to the use of human tissue for research in the nuclear industry.
Nick is a member of the FTA panel of solicitors.
