Experience Overview

Jonathan is a Solicitor based in the Criminal & Misconduct Department at our Cardiff Office. He has been with Russell Jones & Walker since qualifying in law in 2002, completing his training contract with the firm. Jon was admitted as a Solicitor in 2004 and took up his current role at the Cardiff Criminal Department. Jon is described by the Legal 500 2011 Directory as ‘The epitome of a trustworthy, honest and ethical lawyer’ and Chambers & Partners 2012 sources describe Jon as knowing "criminal and misconduct law inside out."

Jon undertakes general criminal defence work for both institutional and private clients and he also has experience of coroners’ inquests and disciplinary hearings.  As an accredited police station solicitor, Jon can represent defendants through the investigative and proceedings stages of the criminal justice system, and has pursued cases to the Court of Appeal and to the Administrative Court. The work of Jon and the Cardiff team has been described as 'second to none’ Legal 500 2011 when it comes to the police work.

Jon’s first degree is in politics & economics and, after working in the third sector and in further education, he studied for a post-graduate diploma in law obtaining a merit, before completing the academic stage of his legal training. He graduated with a distinction on the legal practice course at the University of the West of England in Bristol.

The Legal 500 directory 2010 remark that “Nutman and [his] Bristol-based [colleague] Ian Wilson are ‘competent and conscientious, with unquestionable honesty, professionalism and integrity". Previous editions have said of Jon “…His professional approach, and knowledge of criminal law and police regulation, wins praise from his clients. He carries out varied criminal defence work for institutional clients, notably the Police Federation, including disciplinary tribunal work.”

In his spare time Jon enjoys music, film and travel.  Jon has represented Great Britain at the world games in his sport of wheelchair rugby, having sustained a spinal-cord injury at age 17 through a rugby injury in 1984.
