Roger Lowe Asbestos Mesothelioma Campaign

Welcome to Roger Lowe Asbestos Mesothelioma Campaign page. Roger Lowe was a member of Prospect. He was born and raised in Plymouth. Like his father before him and his eldest grandson after him, he worked at Devonport dockyard.

He knew he had been exposed to asbestos in his time in the dockyard, and took the prudent step of having diagnostic screening in 2003. He got the all-clear, but two years later, after a severe bout of flu, he was admitted to Derriford hospital for tests. A biopsy confirmed that he had mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is a relatively rare form of cancer which affects the lining of the chest (the pleura) and, less commonly, of the abdomen (the peritoneum). The only known cause is exposure to asbestos earlier in life. It is an aggressive form of cancer, and it is incurable.

Roger sadly died at the end of 2005, just seven months after the diagnosis.

His family is determined to raise public awareness of the disease and has set up the Roger Lowe Asbestos Mesothelioma Campaign. It is being run by Prospect jointly with Russell Jones & Walker. The aims are to:

  • Provide a support network for mesothelioma sufferers and their families/loved ones
  • Raise more funds for research into mesothelioma, its early diagnosis and treatment
  • Provide information for those touched by the diseases
  • Raise awareness of the mesothelioma “time bomb”
  • Campaign for research, including government-funded research, into the efficiency of drug therapies and diagnosis of the disease
  • Work alongside other organisations to provide a focus for those good works in the south-west of England.

As a Prospect member Roger Lowe was pursuing a compensation claim on his family's behalf. Russell Jones & Walker are actively involved.

We have set up a free 24-hour telephone helpline on 0800 9169072. This will provide general information about the campaign, and will tell callers where they can find the most appropriate advice and support.

Prospect and Russell Jones & Walker are all too familiar with the consequences of asbestos exposure, and handle a number of compensation claims each year for victims and their families. We also maintain an Asbestos Register to record details of members' workplace exposure to asbestos. This can be used as a source of information if they ever need to make a claim on their own behalf, or to help pursue claims on behalf of their colleagues or former colleagues.

Prospect terms apply to all legal services. For further information please visit the Prospect Guide to Legal Services that is available on Prospect website.

Please note it is a member site only so you will need your membership number and password.
