An Overview
It is unlawful for providers of goods, facilities or services to directly or indirectly discriminate against consumers in the provision of goods and services, or the terms upon which they are offered, on the grounds of race, sex, disability, religion or belief, or sexual orientation.
What is Consumer Discrimination?
Examples of discrimination in goods and services might include a shop or restaurant failing to provide adequate access or restricting services to disabled customers, or a bed & breakfast or hotel discriminating against gay couples by refusing them a room because of their sexual orientation. There are also lots of exceptions, which makes the law complicated as to whether such discrimination is permissible or not. Careful guidance is required from experienced legal advisers.
Whilst most people are aware that discrimination in the workplace is unlawful, there remains a considerable lack of awareness of the law in the wider world, outside of work. The sad reality is that open and offensive discrimination in goods and services is still a real problem and despite decades of anti-discrimination laws, there is little advice on how to challenge it.
It can be extremely distressing to find yourself the victim of consumer discrimination. Discrimination cases involving customer service can also be complex, and sources of advice are unfortunately not well-signposted. Our dedicated team of lawyers offers a sympathetic approach and has extensive experience of advising and litigating in consumer discrimination claims.

Disability Discrimination in Goods and Services
Our expert discrimination lawyers have considerable experience of dealing with cases where disabled people have been denied access to goods and services due to their disability. We are committed to providing a cost-effective, quality and responsive service alongside compassion and an understanding of the client’s position.
Regrettably, disability discrimination is a particularly common form of discrimination in goods and services provision. Often this is because service providers are reluctant or slow to put in place the necessary access provisions or reasonable adjustments required to allow people with disabilities easy freedom to enjoy premises and services.
Occasionally, and more heinously, it occurs through deliberate resistance on the part of individuals to allow a person access to goods, facilities or services as a direct response to the visible aspects of a person’s disability.
If you think you may have a consumer disability discrimination claim, all you need to do is fill out our appropriate Equality Xpress online questionnaire (disability version). Our solicitors will contact you to let you know their opinion about whether you have a potential claim. Equality Xpress is free and 100% confidential.
Sexual Orientation Discrimination in Goods and Services
At Russell Jones & Walker, our discrimination lawyers have dealt with cases where people have been treated differently in the provision of goods and services because of their sexual orientation. We are committed to provide a cost-effective, quality and responsive service in sexual orientation consumer discrimination claims.
It is illegal to discriminate against consumers on the grounds of sexual orientation, yet this discrimination persists in accessing healthcare provision, insurance, holiday or hotel accommodation.
If you think you may have a claim for consumer sexual-orientation discrimination, all you need to do is fill out our appropriate Equality Xpress online questionnaire (sexual orientation version). Our solicitors will contact you to let you know their opinion about whether you have a potential claim. Equality Xpress is free and 100% confidential.
