Although asbestos is no longer used in buildings, its use was wide-spread from the 1930s to the 1970s. Millions of people have been exposed to asbestos at work. Only a few will develop mesothelioma as a result of their exposure but those that do are entitled to make a claim for compensation. This is because many employers knew about the dangers of exposure to asbestos but did not adequately prevent their employees being exposed to fibres. 

It is also possible to bring a mesothelioma claim if you were exposed to asbestos in circumstances other than work. For example from exposure to the fibres on the work clothes of a family member or if you lived near a factory were asbestos use was commonplace.

Don’t worry if your employer is no longer operating as it is still possible to obtain damages,  either through its insurer, by restoring the company, or by bringing a mesothelioma claim under the Government’s scheme via the Pneumoconiosis (Workman’s Compensation) Act 1979.

Supporting the Roger Lowe Foundation

Roger Lowe was born and raised in Plymouth. He worked at Devonport dockyard.  He knew he had been exposed to asbestos in his time in the dockyard and a biopsy confirmed that he had mesothelioma.  Roger sadly died at the end of 2005, just seven months after the diagnosis.

In honour of his memory his family set up the Roger Lowe Foundation which aims to provide advice, help and a support network for other mesothelioma sufferers as well as raise funds for research.  We were very pleased to be able to support them in setting up and running the Foundation, and have a free 24-hour telephone helpline that will provide information about the campaign and where you can find the most appropriate support: 0800 916 9072
