Vigilance Essential to Avoid Cycling Accidents During Tube Strike
3 November 2010
Organisers of the cycling campaign 2 Way Street are urging cyclists, lorry drivers and motorists to be particularly vigilant in light of the impending tube strikes.
The 2 Way Street campaign was launched in August by Gail Porter on behalf of personal injury specialists Russell Jones & Walker, and was supported by the CTC, the UK’s national cyclists’ organisation.
Focusing on cyclist safety, particularly when dealing with HGV drivers, the campaign looked at positive changes that could be enforced to make the roads safer for all road users. However with tube strikes in central London looming, and the Barclays Cycle Hire providing an easy and affordable means of avoiding the disrupted tube service, organisers of the campaign are urging cyclists and road users alike to be especially aware of each other.
Paul Kitson, a claimant personal injury specialist with Russell Jones & Walker with particular expertise in cycling injury claims said: “The impending tube strikes mean that many travellers, not just well-seasoned cyclists, will be opting to travel by bicycle over the next few days, particularly with the easy access to bicycles provided by the Barclays Cycle Hire scheme.
“The increase in people on the road will mean extra caution needs to be taken when navigating the roads of central London, especially for those on bikes who are at greater risk of serious injury.
“These strikes simply highlight how relevant the 2 Way Street Campaign is, and that all adult cyclists across the UK should have access to national standards cycle training, so that they have the confidence and skills to cycle safely on today’s busy urban roads.”
