Successful Compensation Claim for Liam Brickell

14 January 2011

A three-year old Wirral boy who was struck by a car whilst using the pedestrian crossing on New Chester Road will be awarded funds to help fund cosmetic surgery that may be necessary to correct his permanent scarring.

Liam Brickell, now seven, and his mother were both hit by an uninsured driver - already disqualified from driving following prior traffic offences - who ignored a red light. Liam suffered extensive cuts and bruises all over his body as well as a six inch gash along the back of his head, which resulted in severe headaches for the following six months.

With her son set to receive £14,000 compensation from the Motor Insurers Bureau, Liam’s mother - Nicola Watkins – had been waiting anxiously for him to mature so as the extent of his injuries could be fully assessed.

Nicola said: "It’s been confirmed that there’s no brain damage, which was always our primary concern, especially during the six weeks I took off work to care for Liam and help him with his pain relief medication. With the settlement finalising, I feel like we’ve done everything we can do for now. In terms of any sort of cosmetic surgery for his scarring, we’ll help Liam make the decision when he’s older."

Sally Gray of Russell Jones & Walker, Manchester acted on Liam’s behalf. She said: "I’m delighted that we are achieving compensation for Liam. It was an especially harrowing event and, because he's still a small boy, the effects of the accident will be with him for many years to come. Hopefully, this money will help the family address the need for surgery as it arises."
