Six-figure clinical negligence sum awarded

A six-figure clinical negligence compensation sum has been awarded to a woman who is disabled due to errors made during a procedure she underwent as a baby.
According to the BBC, Stacey Jayne Smith was left with cerebral palsy after sustaining serious brain injuries because of mistakes made by professionals as they removed her gall bladder in 1988.
The 24-year-old almost died during the operation at Nottingham City Hospital - which is managed by the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, a body with 13,000 employees - as her heart stopped beating.
Consequently, a case at the High Court in London has ended with the East Midlands Strategic Health Authority granting Ms Smith an undisclosed damages settlement.
The court was told that the negligence of doctors at the hospital resulted in her bowel being punctured, meaning she went into cardiac arrest.
Mr Justice Tugendhat commented: "I do express my sympathy to Stacey's family and wish them all the best for the future."
