Official figures show employment tribunals are 'up by 56%'

New official government figures have shown that the number of tribunal claims for issues such as unfair dismissal and discrimination at work have increased by more than a half in recent times.
According to the statistics published by the Tribunals Service, some 236,100 claims were accepted between April 1st 2009 and March 31st 2010 in comparison to 151,028 over the duration of the same period in 2008-09.
This represents a rise of 56 per cent, which the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance has said may be down to the adverse effects on the country's jobs market caused by the global economic downturn.
Around a quarter of these cases - 95,200 - were found to be centred around Working Time Directive issues, which is now the most common form of grievance among employees in the UK.
Following the recession, practices such as flexible working have become more popular among members of staff across all sectors as organisations find ways of keeping their workforces happy despite being forced to take measures such as budget cuts.
