Man Suffering From Asbestos Related Cancer Makes Appeal to Former Employees

Seriously ill Scunthorpe steel worker urges witnesses to come forward
Man suffering from aggressive, asbestos related cancer asks for help as he tries to prove existence of asbestos at steel works.

A Scunthorpe steelworker who is seriously ill with an aggressive asbestos-related cancer is appealing for fellow employees at the old British Steel Lysaghts and Appleby Froddingham works to come forward and help him prove the presence of asbestos at the works.

Robert Cooke, from Ashby, Scunthorpe, has recently been diagnosed with the asbestos-related cancer, Mesothelioma.  Mr Cooke is now trying to find others who worked in the steel works in the 1960s and 70s to see whether they have any knowledge of the presence of asbestos in the works.

Mr Cooke frequently came into contact with asbestos fibres and dust during his time at the Scunthorpe works and also several other sites, including the 15 inch rolling mill, Appleby Froddingham mill, Redburn and Anchor sites. Mr Cooke believes that asbestos lagging was used on the pipe work and also as joint filler on the furnaces, potentially exposing many employees to the substance on a regular basis.

Simon Allen, national head of Personal Injury at Russell Jones & Walker, Sheffield, who is representing Mr Cooke, said: "This man contracted Mesothelioma as a result of spending many years at the steel works in Scunthorpe.  Mr Cooke is aware that asbestos lagging was used on the steam pipes in the Appleby Froddingham and Lysaghts sites; we are looking for confirmation from witnesses who worked at these steel works in the 1960s and 70s that asbestos lagging was used.  We are also looking for any information that would show where else the asbestos was. We sincerely appreciate any help we can get with this case, and anyone with information should contact the team on rjw@lucre.co.uk or call us on 0114 276 6868."
