Investigation into ?Toxic Sofa? chemicals continues after victim receives payout
3 September 2009
This represents one of a handful of successful claims to date out of an estimated 5000 lodged by people across in the UK who complained of severe skin complaints and other medical complications after using sofas contaminated with anti-mould agent Dimethyl Fumarate (DMF).
Russell Jones & Walker is representing the majority of these cases and leading a group action against three retailers of the affected sofas – Argos, Land of Leather and Walmsleys. There are also a number of cases against smaller retailers, some of which have settled.
The law firm is also currently conducting further in-depth testing of a number of pieces of furniture with medical investigators in order to identify other chemicals that could potentially cause adverse symptoms, such as acute skin reactions, eye complaints and breathing difficulties.
To date, selected batches of sofas manufactured by Chinese companies Linkwise and Eurosofa are confirmed as being contaminated with DMF, however, testing could also unveil other manufacturers whose products are affected.

Richard Langton, the solicitor who is leading the group action against the retailers of affected sofas, said:
"One more person has now received compensation for the horrendous skin reactions they experienced after using a contaminated sofa, however, we are gathering evidence which will allow the thousands of other people affected by DMF to be compensated appropriately."
Further updates are expected after a high court hearing taking place at the end of September.
