High Court awards girl multi-million damages sum

Substantial compensation on the grounds of clinical negligence has been awarded to a young girl left with life-changing injuries due to mistakes at her birth.
Hannah Louise Gudd is blind and will never be able to eat solid food due to the severity of the cerebral palsy she now has because she was starved of oxygen while being delivered in April 2001, the Northampton Chronicle & Echo reports.
The child sustained these injuries while being born at Northampton General Hospital - which is part of the Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust, a body with 4,200 staff - and her parents therefore took legal action.
Subsequently, the hospital admitted liability for her health problems and a case at London's High Court has now ruled that Hannah is entitled to a multi-million pound compensation settlement.
She will now receive a lump sum of £1.15 million, followed by six-figure index-linked annual payments for the rest of her life.
