Appeal for Witnesses Made by Injured Sheffield Woman, Jane Lowe

28 February 2011

A Woman hit by a bus in the city centre asks for witnesses to her pedestrian accident to come forward.

A 45 year old woman who was knocked down by a bus and suffered a fractured skull and pelvis, dislocated shoulder and shattered cheekbones is asking for witnesses to her road traffic accident to come forward.

Mother of two Jane Lowe was crossing the road at the notoriously awkward pedestrian crossing opposite the Mobility Shop on The Wicker when she was hit by a bus.

In the past other pedestrians have been knocked down by vehicles at that very crossing, and since Mrs Lowe’s accident Sheffield City Council has painted a sign instructing pedestrians to “Look Both Ways”; however, the council has denied liability for Mrs Lowe’s accident.

Mrs Lowe, of Sheffield, is now asking witnesses to her accident to come forward, and also for others who have themselves been knocked down on the same crossing to get in touch.

"My accident took place on 10 March last year and I’m convinced it occurred because of the road layout at The Wicker; it leads a pedestrian to believe he is crossing one way traffic and only needs to look left," she said.

Mrs Lowe is not expected to be well enough to return to her job as a mortgage administrator with the Halifax Bank in Sheffield until June 2011 at the earliest.

Simon Allen, joint head of Personal Injury at Russell Jones & Walker, Sheffield, who is representing Mrs Lowe, said: "We know of a number of incidents at the site, including a woman who had her foot run over at the same crossing.  There is even a website, The Sheffield Forum, on which various aspects of the crossing are discussed.

"Mrs Lowe wasn’t in a hurry, obeyed the sign to 'look right' but was led into a trap by the confusing layout of the crossing."

He added: "Jane was very lucky; she could have been killed. She continues to suffer from the effects of the accident, both physically and mentally.  We hope that others who have previously been misled by the road layout come forward to help us with our claim against Sheffield City Council and First Mainline Bus Company, so that others won’t suffer as she has."
