Man awarded £800k for disability discrimination and unfair dismissal claims

A man who claimed he had been the victim of disability discrimination and unfair dismissal has been successful in achieving a payout of nearly £800,000.

Former News of the World reporter Matt Driscoll took News International - which also publishes the Times and the Sun, among other newspapers - to tribunal after being sacked while on long-term sick leave in April 2007.

He was off work for stress-related depression that he suffered as a result of bullying at work, which he suggested was led by editor of the publication Andy Coulson.

Commenting on his legal battle, he said: "I was in the top 30 sports writers in the country. I then came up against the venom of Andy Coulson, which I found very hard to take."

Mr Driscoll added that it has needed a great deal of strength to take on the news group and win.

Meanwhile, News International declined to comment on the case.
