The right to be accompanied

By law, any worker invited to a disciplinary or grievance hearing by their employer has the right to be accompanied by a trade union official or colleague (but not by their lawyer).

That companion not only can take notes and provide psychological support to the worker at a critical time, but also can make representations on behalf of the worker, addressing the hearing and summing up the case, as well as conferring with the worker and responding to any views expressed by the employer.

This has long been recognised as an invaluable service for those workers who are trade union members.  However, you do not need to be a member of a trade union to take advantage of the statutory right to be accompanied.

Many workplaces are not unionised these days, and for many executives, seeking a work colleague to act as a companion is simply not an option.  In non-unionised workplaces, and subject to availability, Russell Jones & Walker can now provide our clients with a trained trade union representative to accompany them to such meetings.

Executive Reps is only available to Russell Jones & Walker clients.
