It was very useful to have the union rep at the meetings. For most people it's the first time they've been in that situation and it's very reassuring to have somebody with you who knows the ropes a bit.
You don't feel like you are so outnumbered or outmanoeuvred. It was particularly useful because the union rep was able to step in from time to time to suggest an adjournment and avoid being railroaded by the employer or being lead down a particular route of questioning that was not relevant.
It also was useful to have somebody who would point out that it wasn't necessary to answer a certain question at a particular time.
